J. F. Setchel

J. F. Setchel is a Baroque artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

This 1720s London printmaker signed his work “J. F. Setchel” in tiny letters along the edge of the plate—just so you’d know who to blame when the ink smudged. His beard portraits are crisp line engravings, each hair defined like a wire, staring out from wigs that look ironed for Sunday service. Hunt for his prints in the British Museum’s “Satirical Prints” drawer; the one of the judge with the powdered wig shaped like a mushroom will make you laugh out loud.
