Iten Sōsei

Iten Sōsei is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Iten Sōsei painted monks with wild eyes and tangled beards, making saints look like they’d just rolled out of a tavern. One scroll shows Kanzan, the tipsy poet-monk, and Jittoku, the grinning old fool, stumbling through ink-black grass—no backgrounds, just ink and paper. Look for the pair titled *Kanzan and Jittoku* if you want to see how Sōsei turned holy men into human messengers.
