Artist
Paulus Petrovitz
Paulus Petrovitz is a Biedermeier artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Buftea Studios.
Paulus Petrovitz kept painting the same three portraits for thirty years. Every year, another version: the same stony stare, the same dark coat, the same ruler’s hand resting on a ledger. He never left Bucharest, but the city’s light crept into the edges of his canvases—smoky golds where no lamp should be. Look at *Domnitorul Gheorghe Bibescu* (1844) and you’ll see a man who knows power is temporary; the gilt frame is holding its breath. Petrovitz belongs in Gallery Tiles because that single painting lets you step into a 19th-century hallway where every portrait is asking the same quiet question.
