Paulus Petrovitz

Paulus Petrovitz kept painting the same three portraits for thirty years. Every year, another version: the same stony stare, the same dark coat, the same ruler’s hand resting on a ledger. He never left Bucharest, but the city’s light crept into the edges of his canvases—smoky golds where no lamp should be.
