Portrait of Austrian 12th Century

1140–1140

Austrian 12th Century was an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

This 12th-century Austrian hand drew delicate scenes in brown and red ink with washes of color on vellum. One surviving page shows Saint John Dictating to the Venerable Bede, a small but precise narrative in flowing lines and soft hues. These images belong to the world of Romanesque manuscripts, where every stroke counted and every color had meaning. Step closer to see how light picked out folds in a robe or how the saint’s hand guided the scribe’s quill in the same motion.
