Artist

Samuel Gillespie Prout

Samuel Gillespie Prout is a British Romanticism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Samuel Prout liked to wander with a sketchbook and a bottle of ink, turning tourists’ postcards into art. His watercolors of European alleyways and Gothic doorways feel alive because he worked from quick, on-the-spot scribbles instead of stiff studio setups. You’ll spot the trick in his *Landscape* (c. 1850–1900): every crack in the plaster and crumpled hat brim is drawn with the same ink nib, making the whole scene hum.
