Katsushika School

Katsushika School is an Ukiyo-e artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

A late-Edo print shop known as the Katsushika School produced crowd-pleasing sketches that travelers could tuck into their sleeves. Their woodblock prints often featured the Sumida River’s boats and bridges in soft dawn light, or the flash of fireworks over Ryōgoku Bridge. These pocket-sized pictures traded in everyday scenes—parasol vendors, courtesan portraits, shop fronts—made to sell on the street the same day. To see one up close, tap Sumida River at Dawn.
