This 1900s London studio cranked out stiff-backed portraits with the efficiency of a factory line, dressing actors and dancers in their Sunday best before the camera. They froze the swirling skirts of Ruth St. Denis mid-twirl and caught a young Noël Coward looking more bored than dashing, all in the same glossy card. You can still buy these tiny portraits today in London’s Portobello Road stalls; hunt for the ones labeled “Rotary Photographic Co.”
