These guys turned photography into a backstage pass. Back in the 1860s, they invented the carte-de-visite—little calling-card photos that actors sold to fans after shows. The trick was speed: eight tiny portraits on one glass plate, printed while you waited. You’ve probably seen one; they’re the size of a playing card and flip like a Rolodex. Look up Guy Little Theatrical Photographs—April 1870—and swipe through the whole set; each face is still lit like it’s stepping into the spotlight.
