Hal Mansfield Murray

Hal Mansfield Murray is an Impressionism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Hal Mansfield Murray’s wife, Alma, posed for him in a role she never actually played onstage: Beatrice Cenci in Shelley’s tragic play. The 1887 painting shows Alma draped in gauzy white, her face half-hidden in shadow, as if caught between a script she didn’t get to finish. Murray’s brush lingers on the tension between innocence and dread—details like the chipped ring on her finger and the candle’s guttering flame tell you everything. Look for the way her left hand clutches at the armrest: that’s the moment before the fall.
