Joseph W. Gehrig spent his days lugging glass plates through New York’s Theater District, chasing the perfect pose. He’d crouch behind the curtain just before a matinee, snapping actors mid-laugh or mid-frown before the house lights dimmed. He never signed the prints, but his theater ghosts—rouged cheeks, crumpled scripts, one boot kicked up—still whisper from the pages of Guy Little’s collection. If you squint at his 1890s photos, you’ll spot the birth of what we now call “candid theater shots.”
