Lotte Goldschmidt spent her mornings in a cluttered studio above a Bucharest bookshop, ink-stained fingers and half-drunk tea cups everywhere. She made sharp, no-nonsense portraits of friends and neighbors, whether they sat still for a print or a still life of their clutter. Her 1934 “Predicator luteran din Brașov” turns a stern churchman into a study of light on cloth and wood—look for the single sunbeam cutting across his collar.
