Artist
Thierry Frères
Thierry Frères is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Thierry Frères ran a print shop in 19th-century Paris where artists dropped off copper plates and picked up proofs. He kept the rejects—scratched, smudged, or faintly inked—and turned them into single-sheet prints sold by weight to frame makers. Look at the H Beard Collection and you’ll find faces that blur into the paper, shadows that dissolve into the grain; the images feel half-remembered, like waking from a nap to a sunlit wall. If you’ve ever paused before a poster that’s slightly out of focus, you’ve felt Thierry’s quiet trick.
