Pauline Hufnagel-Spreer

Pauline Hufnagel-Spreer is an Art Nouveau artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Brukenthal National Museum.

Pauline Hufnagel-Spreer spent her career painting the same corner of a Hungarian village where she grew up, returning to the same wooden bridge year after year. At a time when artists rushed to Paris for new styles, she stayed put and painted the bridge in all weathers, season after season. Her small canvas *Podul* from 1898 shows the bridge at dusk, the wood worn soft by time. She belongs in Gallery Tiles because she proves you don’t need to chase trends to make art that lasts.
