J. Mariette

J. Mariette is an artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

French printmakers in the late 1600s and early 1700s captured singers on stage, and J. Mariette made opera scenes like Mademoiselle Rochois Chantant à L'Opéra. This print shows a soprano mid-aria, her mouth open wide, the score beside her. A second print, H Beard Print Collection, flips the scene to a seated figure holding a mask. Both sheets are early engravings, inked on laid paper with careful cross-hatching. Step from here to the print itself to see how light and line turn a voice into an image.
