Jean Mariette

Jean Mariette is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

A Paris printmaker of the late 1600s, Jean Mariette carved religious scenes for a devout public. His engraving *The Virgin and Infant Jesus* shows the pair in a soft chiaroscuro glow, framed by swags of drapery and a cloudy sky—typical of the period’s book frontispieces and private devotionals. The plate was inked on laid paper, small enough to tuck into a breviary or slip onto a mantel. Tap the print to zoom in on the fine network of lines around the infant’s fingers.
