Master of Staffolo

Master of Staffolo is an Early Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This unknown painter from the early 1400s made small religious panels full of sharp folds and gold-leaf halos. One of their works shows Saint Francis kneeling on a rocky hill with rays of light hitting his hands and feet—Saint Francis of Assisi Receiving the Stigmata. The stiff figures and glowing backgrounds belong to the International Gothic style, where the real world bends to fit gold-backed dreams. Look next at Gentile da Fabriano’s Adoration of the Magi to see how other painters draped saints in lush fabrics and starry skies.
