Master of 1565

Portrait of Master of 1565

1480–1599

Master of 1565 was a Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

This anonymous woodcut artist worked in the 16th century, carving scenes with sharp lines and dense detail. One of their prints, *Veronica*, shows a veil held up to Christ’s face, the face itself left blank—a rare, symbolic choice. Their small output survives mostly in single sheets, some trimmed by time, others bound in old books. Look for the way folds of fabric catch the light, or how crowds gather just outside the frame next, then tap into *Veronica* to study the blank stare at the center of this story.
