Portrait of Augsburg 15th Century

1493–1493

Augsburg 15th Century was a Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

This woodcut from the late 1400s shows Christ nailed to the cross, with the Virgin Mary and Saint John standing below. The artist printed it in five separate blocks, then added bright gouache colors by hand on vellum. It’s a single surviving copy from Augsburg, made in 1493. See how the thin lines build up shadows and the reds and blues feel almost like a painted panel. Next, tap to look closer at Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and Saint John.
