Artist

Alvaro Sanchez

Alvaro Sanchez is an Early Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Groeningemuseum.

Spanish painter active in the mid-1400s, Alvaro Sanchez made religious panels with gold-leaf backdrops. In the bundle you’ll find his John the Baptist enthroned with the Founder Ivan de la Pena, a 15th-century altarpiece where the Baptist sits on a carved throne while the kneeling donor holds a tiny model of the church he founded. Look for the punch of red on the donor’s robe and the careful folds of the saint’s greenish mantle to spot his hand. Tap the full altarpiece to zoom in on the Latin inscription running along the bottom.
