John Axel Richard Beer
John Axel Richard Beer is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
John Beer spent his life sketching the people who passed through St. Petersburg’s grand hotels, always with a pocket notebook in his waistcoat. He caught the stiff posture of Tsar Nicholas II mid-hunt in 1900, the pencil lines just firm enough to show how the emperor looked when he wasn’t smiling for portraits. Flip to Beer’s drawing if you want to see power before it gets polished—it’s hanging in the Hermitage’s print room, tucked next to the gilt frames.
