George Grey Barnard

George Grey Barnard is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

George Grey Barnard spent his life carving stone with a hammer and a hacksaw in a barn in Washington Heights, New York, leaving chips everywhere and calling the mess “studio.” When he wasn’t chiseling, he moonlighted as a bouncer at a Village saloon to pay the rent. His hands knew the weight of marble better than the weight of a paycheck. You can still see the barn—now part of a church complex on 175th Street—where he carved his early figures.
