Artist
William Delamotte
William Delamotte is a Romanticism artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
William Delamotte spent years sketching the same Gothic ruins in Oxfordshire until the crumbling arches started feeling like old friends. He’d set up camp with his sketchbook and a bag of stale sandwiches, returning in all weathers—rain or sideways sun—just to catch the light hitting the stones a certain way. His drawings feel less like documentation and more like gossip from the 1400s. Look up his 1846 Oxfordshire ruin and you’ll see what he means: the jagged gaps in the wall aren’t mistakes, they’re the building’s way of whispering its secrets.
