A Welsh watercolorist of the mid-19th century, Charles Pyne captured medieval castles and towers along the Welsh coast. His Eagle Tower, Carnarvon shows the fortress rising above the slate roofs of the town, its pink stone glowing in the low light of a damp afternoon. Look next at Pyne’s sketch of Flint Castle, where the octagonal towers stand half-ruined in the marsh grass.
