Artist

John Cawthorn

John Cawthorn is a Romanticism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

John Cawthorn made prints in early-1800s Britain, turning current events into single-sheet images for quick sale and view. One of the few surviving pieces is the H Beard Print Collection titled “10th April 1808,” showing a London street scene on that exact date. The print sits in the tradition of popular topical engravings sold in shop windows and taverns. Tap the print to zoom in on the hats, carriages, and shop signs that tell the city’s story hour by hour.
