Portrait of Japanese 13th Century

1200–1299

Japanese 13th Century was an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

This artist carved a serene Amida Buddha from wood in 13th-century Japan. A single surviving fragment shows the figure’s calm face and folded hands, typical of the era’s devotional sculpture. The smooth planes and gentle curves invite quiet reflection. The surface once held gold leaf, now worn to soft brown. Look closer at the delicate curls in the ushnisha at the top of the head.
