Franz Russ

Franz Russ painted Romanian rural scenes in the 1850s, sticking to quiet hills and farmhouses. His 1859 Peisaj de deal shows a layered Carpathian valley at dusk, while Casă țărănească gives a close-up of a shingle-roofed cottage with a wooden fence. Both works are small, tightly framed oil sketches that avoid grand drama. Russ belonged to the same generation as the first Romanian landscapists who carried their canvases outdoors.
