Artist

John Powell

John Powell is a Rococo painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Galleries Scotland.

John Powell painted single oil portraits of British sitters in the late 1700s and early 1800s. They left a small body of work, including the 1787 canvas Stephen Henry Hough. Every brushstroke belongs to the quiet, unshowy tradition of British portraiture between Hogarth and the Regency. To see where Powell’s subjects sat, look for plain backgrounds and the controlled light on lace cuffs and dark coat lapels.
