Leonard Boden

Leonard Boden is a Realism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Leonard Boden painted singers on stage during the 1950s and ’60s, catching the moment under bright house lights. In 1961 he stood backstage at Covent Garden and captured Boris Christoff in full costume as Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, the bass’s fur-trimmed robes catching the glow of the footlights. Boden’s brushwork freezes the hush just before the downbeat, the score’s heavy chords trapped on the canvas. Look next at the same backdrop painted in 1959 when Christoff took on Mussorgsky’s Pimen.
