Thomas Simmonds spent years sketching the same tidal island until the monks’ gray stone walls felt like home. He painted *Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, France* from memory in a studio across the Channel, the abbey floating on a sheet of oil like a paper boat. See it here and you’ll notice the foreground shadows are three shades too long—he wanted the tide to feel real even when the water wasn’t there.
