This 17th-century printmaker carved mythological scenes into copper plates, leaving ink to do the talking. Look for “The Suckling of Hercules,” where baby Hercules gets a divine nursemaid’s milk while snakes coil at the edges. Their sharp burin turned gods and heroes into black-and-white shadows you can almost feel. Tap the print to run your eye along the fine hatching and see how light was cut straight from shadow.
