Artist

Friedrich J. Krepp

Friedrich J. Krepp is a Biedermeier artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Brukenthal National Museum.

Krepp showed up at every royal parade with a sketchbook, taking notes on how light hit gold braid and how emperors stood just a little too still. He painted Franz Joseph in 1858 wearing a hat that looks like a lampshade in afternoon sun—no flattery, just the facts. If you’ve ever stood in a palace corridor staring at one portrait too many, his version of the emperor feels like a break in the boredom.
