Portrait of Austrian 14th Century

1325–1350

Austrian 14th Century was an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

This artist made a tiny, detailed drawing of Saint Christopher on a scrap of animal skin. In *An Aedicule with Two Studies of Saint Christopher* (around 1340), you’ll see the saint carrying the Christ child across a river, sketched in ink that’s still sharp after 700 years. These small vellum pages were like medieval notepads—people used them to practice figures before painting them bigger. Tap the drawing to zoom in and follow the saint’s journey across the page.
