Italian 16th/17th Century

Portrait of Italian 16th/17th Century

1580–1630

Italian 16th/17th Century was a Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

This Italian artist from the late 1500s to early 1600s drew with chalk on paper. Their surviving sheet, *A Partially Skinned Rat*, shows two shades of red chalk with traces of black, a precise study of the animal’s form and texture. The work belongs to a tradition of naturalistic drawing that flourished in Italy before the Baroque fully took hold. Look next at *A Partially Skinned Rat* to see how a simple sheet of paper can hold a sharp, almost clinical gaze.
