Artist

Carillo

Spanish

Carillo is a Spanish Early Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Carillo was born in Spain.

Carillo’s real name is lost, but the city keeps whispering it—Florence, where he painted on scraps of leather because canvas was too expensive for a shoemaker’s son. He brushed thin layers of earth and egg yolk, building up faces that looked like they’d been worn smooth by time. His small Madonna and Child in the Uffizi wears a blue robe that’s almost the color of the Arno at dusk; stand close enough and you’ll see every worn thread in the hem.
