Vanden Wyde

Vanden Wyde is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Vanden Wyde lived in London’s theater district, where gas lamps flickered and actors’ faces lit up in the dark. They spent nights photographing performers mid-scene, catching their exaggerated smiles and stage whispers on glass plates. Their trick was to print the negatives onto rough, textured paper that made the images feel alive. A friend once said Wyde’s prints looked like the actors were still breathing. See for yourself in Guy Little Theatrical Photograph, a late-1800s portrait that turns a frozen moment into something warmly human.
