Karl Pavlovitš Brjullov

Karl Pavlovitš Brjullov is an artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Finnish National Gallery.

This Russian-born artist spent years sketching Italian street life between commissions, always with a pocketful of charcoal stubs. He painted *The Last Days of Pompeii* so big—over 4.5 meters wide—that he had to teach himself fresco techniques on the fly. Why he matters: tap his copy of that apocalyptic scene, or hunt for the tiny dog in the corner that got most of the attention from 19th-century viewers.
