Simon Ruys

d. 1690

Simon Ruys was a Dutch Golden Age artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Rijksmuseum. Simon Ruys was born in The Hague.

A Dutch painter who captured faces in oil, Simon Ruys worked in the late 1600s, leaving behind a single surviving portrait. In 1683 he painted the formal Portrait of Johannes Camprich van Cronefelt, Knight of the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus, Imperial German Ambassador to The Hague — a stiff-collared diplomat frozen in time. Ruys’s brush trapped lace, ribbon, and the ambassador’s steady gaze. Tap the Knight’s portrait to meet the man behind the Order’s starched folds.
