Dupust Genron Ernest liked to paint people who’d rather be elsewhere. He once hid a whole afternoon in a corner of his Paris studio, pretending to be a chair so he could watch how light draped over a woman’s sleeve without her noticing. His 1892 “Afternoon of a Roman Patrician” shows exactly that tension: a noblewoman caught mid-glance at the window, her silk gown half in sun, half in shade, as if she’s already halfway out the door.
