German lithographer August Strixner made small, crisp portrait prints in the 1800s. His ink-on-paper sheet shows the Romanian painter Gheorghe Tattarescu staring back in fine detail. Look closer and you can trace the parallel lines of the lithographic crayon that built the face out of cross-hatching.
