Portrait of Flemish 16th Century

1500–1599

Flemish 16th Century was a Renaissance artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.

Flemish artists of the 1500s cast bronze reliefs and small sculptures lively with myth and scripture. Their bronze *Three Cupids* shows chubby toddlers in playful motion, while the engraving *Battle of the Horatii and the Curiatii* freezes a Roman legend in sharp black lines. Look for Saint Matthew and the mini-bell crowded with Orpheus, poppies, saints, and dragons—each piece fits a palm and tells its story in miniature. To see more myth-swarmed bronze, tap *Saint George Defeating the Dragon*.
