Carl’s studio smelled like turpentine and old coffee. In the corner, a half-peeled orange sat next to a chipped mug for weeks, just another still life that never got finished. He left Romania in the 1930s with a single suitcase and a stack of blank canvases, ending up in Paris where he painted the same café table over and over, shadows shifting, cups never cleared. His quiet obsession lives on in Natură statică—if you tap the still life, look for the thread of light on the glass rim, almost the only thing that ever moved in his work.
