Jacob van den, zis Giacomo da Castello Kerckhoven

Jacob van den, zis Giacomo da Castello Kerckhoven is a Baroque artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Timișoara National Museum of Art.

This Flemish painter—call him Giacomo da Castello—spent his nights in Antwerp taverns sketching game birds and fish still glistening on marble slabs, turning barroom chatter into stiff, startled still lifes. Every quill on a dead duck’s breast or lemon slice is dry as parchment, as if the hunt had just ended and nothing would spoil before morning. Look up his paired *Still Life with Birds* and *Still Life with Game and Fish* at the Brukenthal Museum; the hinged frames make the birds and hares face each other like strangers at a table.
