Artist

John Louis Petit

John Louis Petit is a British Romanticism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

John Louis Petit painted quiet watercolours of the English coast and countryside in the 1830s–50s. In Coast Scene near Scarborough he shows the North Yorkshire shore with spare, sure washes and just enough detail to let the viewer stand on that shingle and feel the wind off the North Sea. Petit belonged to no movement; he simply carried on the topographical tradition, observing places like Scarborough, Whitby and the Lake District with a clear eye. Tap Coast Scene near Scarborough to step right onto the beach and watch the light shift across the water.
