Artist

Antonio Montúfar

Antonio Montúfar is an Early Baroque Italian artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Antonio Montúfar loved painting saints like drama queens—big gestures, bright robes, and a crowd of donors watching from the wings. His *Saint Francis of Assisi Appearing before Pope Nicholas V, with Donors* is pure theater: the saint floats in, the pope jumps back like he’s seen a ghost, and the donors look smug, like they paid for front-row seats. You know it’s good when the candlelight flickers off the gold brocade and you forget the paint is two inches thick.
