William Birch

William Birch is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

William Birch spent his days sketching Philadelphia’s brick sidewalks, his pockets always stuffed with charcoal sticks. In 1800 he turned those walks into prints, tiny windows showing everyday doors, stoops and signs in crisp black-and-white. Flip through his H Beard Print Collection and you’ll spot the 1799 view of Market Street—look just past the hat shop and you’ll see the city breathe, before cars or crowds.
