Elias Muukka

Elias Muukka is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Finnish National Gallery.

Elias Muukka had a habit of packing up his sketchbook, a hammer, and a pocketful of nails and heading straight for the nearest fortress or factory. In the late 1800s he turned sheet metal into scenery—Finnish castles and rivers that looked like they were hammered from the same stuff as the sky. You’ll spot the trick in “Olavinlinna”: the fortress walls ripple like water because he cut the metal while it was still soft. If you like rugged edges and the smell of hot iron, look up his metal landscapes; they’re like blueprints that forgot to stay flat.
