About this work
Overview
Adriaen van der Werff, a Dutch painter active in the early 18th century, completed the oil painting *Agony in the Garden* in 1711. Executed within the Flemish Baroque tradition, the work portrays a nocturnal biblical episode and is presently housed in Munich’s Alte Pinakothek.
Subject & Meaning
The composition presents the moment when Christ, surrounded by his disciples, experiences profound distress in the Garden of Gethsemane. A kneeling figure with a bowed head looks upward, while two others in red garments sit or stand with clasped hands, emphasizing prayer and sorrow. In the distance, a white‑clad figure leans over a prostrate form, suggesting the impending betrayal.
Technique & Style
Van der Werff employs a stark chiaroscuro, contrasting deep, shadowed foliage with sharply illuminated figures. The dark woodland backdrop isolates the characters, heightening emotional intensity. The handling of oil paint yields smooth flesh tones and richly saturated reds, while the limited palette reinforces the somber atmosphere characteristic of Baroque devotional art.
History & Provenance
Created in 1711, the painting entered the collection of the Alte Pinakothek, where it remains on display. Van der Werff’s younger brother, Pieter, worked closely with him as his chief pupil and assistant, contributing to the studio’s output during this period.
