About this work
Overview
Anton Einsle, an Austrian portraitist trained at the Vienna Academy, executed this self‑portrait in 1864. Rendered in oil on canvas, the work exemplifies the Biedermeier aesthetic and is part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s collection.
Subject & Meaning
The canvas presents the artist himself, dressed in a gray suit with red trim and a bow tie. A full beard and moustache frame his face, which is illuminated by soft light that isolates his features against a muted backdrop, emphasizing his identity as a painter.
Technique & Style
Einsle employs subtle chiaroscuro, allowing gentle shadows to model the facial planes while the dark background recedes. Red accents in the clothing provide a restrained splash of colour, and the careful rendering of textures—fabric, hair, and wood—reflects Biedermeier attention to detail.
History & Provenance
After its completion, the painting entered the holdings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it remains on display. Einsle’s reputation among the Viennese court and aristocracy contributed to the work’s acquisition by the institution.
