About this work

Overview

Created in 1525, *Madonna with Child and Apple* is an oil painting by the Lombard artist Bernardino Luini. Executed during the later phase of the High Renaissance, the work reflects the emerging Mannerist taste for elegant elongation and refined gesture. It is part of the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

Subject & Meaning

The composition shows the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ, who reaches toward a bright red apple. The apple, a traditional symbol of the Fall, underscores the theological link between the New Covenant and humanity’s original sin. Mary’s left hand clasps a small red book, likely a devotional text, while the child is partially draped in a white cloth.

Technique & Style

Luini employs a chiaroscuro scheme that models the figures against a deep, almost black background, heightening the contrast between light and shadow. The figures are rendered with elongated eyes and graceful poses, hallmarks of Luini’s adaptation of Leonardo’s sfumato and soft modelling. The red dress and brown shawl are painted with delicate brushwork that suggests the texture of fabric.

History & Provenance

Although Luini worked closely with Leonardo’s workshop, his paintings were often mistaken for those of his master. *Madonna with Child and Apple* entered the Berlin Gemäldegalerie in the early 20th century, having passed through several private collections in northern Italy before being acquired by the museum.

Context

The work belongs to a period when Lombard artists were integrating Leonardo’s innovations with local devotional traditions. Luini’s output during the 1520s shows a shift toward more stylised, courtly figures, aligning with the broader Mannerist movement that favored elegance over the balanced naturalism of earlier High Renaissance works.
