Jan Karel Nicolaas van Hove, Dean of the Guild of Saint Luke

Created by Flemish artist Caspar Jacob van Opstal the Younger, who worked in Antwerp and Italy, the portrait has remained in the Belgian public sphere, eventually entering the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Its documentation traces back to the early 18th century, confirming its attribution to van Opstal.

Van Opstal was known for mythological and biblical scenes as well as portraiture, and this work exemplifies his capacity to render dignified civic figures.
